Final Draft has taken a leap forward to allow writers of either stripe be productive. I'm a front loader. Way before I write the words Fade In and craft my first words of action, I develop a detailed outline of the screenplay including thematic elements and character profiles. Certainly I'm ready to depart from this plan should I be inspired while I'm drafting.
But if there's no plan, there's nothing to depart from. This is the way I write and it's the way I endorse to my students and colleagues. But maybe you're not a front loader like me.
